As a result of the experiences related in this memoir, she is a well-known campaigner, not only for Australian prisoners but those from many nationalities incarcerated in foreign jails.

She continues to campaign for prisoners’ rights, helping them prepare pardon applications while also assisting prisoners’ families in a very private fashion.

John Doran’s plight and Debbie Singh’s six-year struggle to have her brother transferred to an Australian prison attracted a great deal of high profile media over the years of her campaign and made front-page headlines on his return.

Debbie was recently nominated as one of 25 inspirational West Australians by Scoop magazine for 2005 and currently works with the Western Australian Department of Justice, supporting and mentoring underprivileged children.

Debbie Singh’s life fell apart when she received a letter from her brother out of the blue. He had been sentenced to ten years in Klong Prem prison, the notorious ‘Bangkok Hilton’, for fencing a $1,000 cheque. The severity of the sentence shocked Singh, and she immediately set off to Bangkok to visit him, offer her support, and locate his Thai-born son.

Appalled by the horrendous circumstances she found him in, she started a campaign to have him transferred to an Australian jail, something never achieved before. This campaign changed her life - and that of her family - forever.
