Notice to Laotian nationals applying to register with UNHCR
|
|
Over the past weeks, UNHCR has received asylum applications from thousands
of Laotian nationals, which has totally overwhelmed the capacity of this Office.
In addition, the Royal Thai Government has indicated to UNHCR that it does
not wish UNHCR to process this group for refugee status determination,
many of whom are believed to have been residents of refugee camps under the Comprehensive Plan of Action (CPA) for whom refugee status determination is no longer required.
While UNHCR has recently become involved in the resettlement operations of Laotian Hmong from Wat Tham Krabok, it does not have a resettlement programme for people who were not included in the Wat Tham Krabok operation.
UNHCR notes that it is currently processing a large backlog of several thousand asylum applications from Myanmar and non-Myanmar nationals in urban areas, for which the capacity of the Office is completely overstretched. As a result, considerable delays have been caused in the refugee status determination process. UNHCR is currently focussing on clearing this backlog and in issuing decisions to the large number of applicants who are awaiting them.
As a result of all these factors, UNHCR is not able to register Laotian applicants for refugee status determination at this time. As such, we are not able to schedule you for a registration appointment. If you have already received an appointment to register, we regret that we are not able to register you due to this policy.
We regret that we cannot be of any further assistance to you at this stage.
