What to do if your loved one is Arrested overseas
When a person travels overseas they
leave behind their Country's legal support
systems, emergency service capabilities and medical facilities. Whilst
your Government is obliged to provide prisoner support, there may be
limitations. Read the Consular Services Charter applicable to your country. Familiarise yourself with local laws where your loved one is arrested overseas, they may face a significant period of
detention before their case goes before a court. Understand that prison conditions and sentencing can be harsh. Don't offend the detaining state by saying their
laws are ridiculous (even if you think
they are). Wait until you have engaged a lawyer, with proven international experience AND who has worked on similar cases, before you speak to
media. Sound legal and media strategies and diplomacy offer the best
outcomes. Work with only those who have proven experience in risk mitigation.
Governments are obliged by International Law to
observe the sovereign rights of another country and cannot march over
the jurisdictional rights of
another to impose its own rule of law. Proper processes are available to
right any wrongs or to raise the fact that an injustice has occurred. Foreign internment is a complex issue and needs to be managed expertly. Engage advisors who can mitigate
the risk and negotiate best outcomes. Build strong and positive relationships with others.

AUSTRALIANS RACE TO FIRING SQUAD
The Indonesian Government carried out its first execution since 2008. (Story here) A total of twenty more foreigners are scheduled for execution. Among them two Australians, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan. These two men have made incredible and significant progress in responding to the
rehabilitation programs of Kerobokan Prison, Bali. Of particular note, Art
Projects were created under their initiative and are helping to rehabilitate hundreds of prisoners. Lives are being restored and former drug traffickers are turning away from old, illegal ways. (Photo: Myuran's family)

BRING MARTIN HOME

Martin Garnett (Australian) is Australia's longest serving prisoner in an overseas jail, yet few have heard his name or his story. (Read here) He is just one of the many thousands of prisoners we support and is a remarkable man who has bettered himself in a place that could have easily robbed him of his sanity. Martin has been granted the right to transfer back to Australia from the US prison where he is
currently incarcerated. The NSW Prison Services require these costs to be borne by Martin's family (A$19,287). His mother is unable to mortgage her home (she was denied due to age) so instead, she took up a campaign: Bring Martin Home.
"Enough is enough.... over 21 years already for a FIRST offence.... I need my son home!" - Lyn Garnett, Australia.
Bring Martin Home campaign for support. They are only a few thousand short.

Give It Up - Russell Brand
The mentality and behavior of drug addicts and alcoholics is wholly
irrational until you understand that they are completely powerless over
their addiction and unless they have structured help they have no hope. This is the reason I (Russell Brand) have started a fund within Comic Relief, “Give It Up”. Read on.... |
