CARANDIRU PRISION RIOT

Located near Sao Paolo, Carandiru is one of the most notorious prisons in Brazil. It is the largest correctional facility in all of South America, and
is also the site of the massacre of 111 prisoners by guards in October 1992.

This graphic series of pictures is more recent than that; they are believed
to depict inmate-on-inmate violence, meted out as punishment. It is easy for
tempers to flare in a prison designed for 3,200 inmates that is currently
holding over 8,000.
