PRESS RELEASE RE KELLY TRUEMAN (16 September 2009)
PLEASE NOTE: This is the ONLY information that will be released. Kelly is not available for interviews. Your cooperation is requested.
In the early hours of August 14, 2009, Kelly Trueman arrived back home in Melbourne. Kelly had been detained in Mumbai, India since early 2006 and accused of various drug related offences. She was found not guilty of all these charges in December 2008 and released from the Mumbai Womens’ Prison where she had been held for nearly 3 years. But release from jail does not mean the freedom to return home. There is a statutory period before it is possible to leave the country and many innocent people can wait a year and much more before being granted an exit visa.
Kelly was met at the airport by her mother, father and an older sister and spent the rest of the night at home. Her return had been kept a secret as it was her plan to surprise her younger twin sisters for their birthday at a birthday breakfast that day. The twins declared that it was the biggest surprise and the best birthday present that they ever had.
Kelly said "It is such an overwhelming relief and joy to be home and part of a family again. For the moment I just want to totally forget about the past few years and start to work through what I am to do in the future. Perhaps some time in the future I might be able to look back over recent years, but not for some time yet. In the meantime, I want everybody to know about the enormous support given to me by my family, my mother and youngest sister Lani who spent the bulk of those three years living in Mumbai to help and encourage me and the huge number of friends who kept in touch through letters and emails passed on through my mother"
