Kristin [Ramphia Lo] Thailand
'My baby was born in prison'

This is Ramphia Lo (Kristin), a Thai National. Kristin is detained in the Women's Correctional Institute in Bangkok called, Lard Yao since November 2001. She was at the time, 8 months pregnant, to UK Citizen Jody Ryan Aggett.

Upon learning of Kristin's pregnancy, Jody Ryan Aggett returned to Thailand with the intention of bringing his girlfriend of four years back home with him to start a new life together in the UK. They delayed their return due to Kristin's advanced stage of pregnancy. When the couple started to run low on cash, they accepted an offer from a friend to stay at the house of Dutch/Canadian [Adrian van Ommering] who had offered free room and board in exchange for cleaning duties and opening and closing the travel agency on the ground floor.

'The pain in her eyes when we left her after our open visit was something I will never forget. She just stood there with tears running down her face and later wrote to me and said it was one of the hardest things she has ever had to do
On November 20, 2001, the Thai police raided the house where Jody and Kristin were staying. The couple was arrested alongside some of the employees of the travel agency.

Jody Ryan Aggett was sent to the notorious Bang Kwang Prison [Big Tiger]. Kristin was sent to Lard Yao and within a month, her baby was born behind bars.

During the investigation of the case, the police intelligence information was based largely upon the testimony of a police informer, who spoke in detail about Adrian van Ommering and his Thai girlfriend, but never once mentioned any involvement of Jody and Kristin. They were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

At the trial, 17 months later, that same police informer, did not attend, apparently, he had run away. The employees of the travel agency were not detained but gave evidence that Jody had been waiting for a visa for Kristin, and hoped to take her to the UK. They said that the couple had hardly any money and no assets. When Jody's Defence lawyer asked the arresting officer why he had taken his client into custody, the officer replied, "Because he was in the house". When challenged as to why the employees of the travel agency, who also lived on the premises, were not equally kept on remand, the police officer had no answer.

Jody Ryan Aggett and Ramphia Lo [Kristin] were sentenced by the court and both received the death penalty. This was later commuted to life imprisonment.

Jody's parents, Tony and Lorna Aggett, remember Kristin as a 'young woman who is one of the most beautiful people I have ever have the privilege of knowing. She is soft, gentle, caring, humble and so respectful of the people around her, especially her elders - she is wonderful' says Lorna.

'When Tony and I went to Thailand we were in total confusion. We couldn't understand what their crime was and no one seemed to want to tell us. Kristin begged us to take her baby back to England when it was born. We were at first a little nervous about this but at that time we were sure the authorities would release them' says Lorna.

'After baby Ryan was born we went back to Thailand to collect him. Our beautiful grandson was only two months old. Tony and I walked with Ryan in my arms to say good-bye to Kristin. It was painful to see her heart break; that I will always remember - as if there hadn't been enough pain already' cries Lorna.

I have always admired that young Thai woman we know as Kristin, who would have been a daughter to me. She is so strong and so self-sacrificing to let her baby go. I'm sure I couldn't have done what she did - she was only thinking of Ryan's future - amazing' says Lorna.

Kristin has grown up so much and is now a young woman full of confidence - but the sadness in her eyes as she longs to be free, is something Tony and Lorna Aggett will never forget. Kristin has done nothing to deserve a life sentence and the Aggett's hope and pray that there is some one, somewhere, that will reach out and help her.

'The pain in her eyes when we left her after our open visit was something I will never forget. She just stood there with tears running down her face and later wrote to me and said it was one of the hardest things she has ever had to do - standing there watching us walk out - with her little boy' says Lorna.

Update 23 October 2006
FPSS member Mark Gyssler of Germany, visted Kristin on Thursday, October 19, 2006, in Lard Yao Women's Prison. Mark also visited with Eugene Noboto and Gifty Addo. All at the same time! Even if it was only a 20 mins visit they all had a good time chatting and laughed a lot. Mark brought apples, oranges, salads, chicken, eggs, cakes, grapes, mangos, and some fruit he'd never seen before, for the three of them. He was told afterwards that they were really enjoying lunch that day! Gifty desperately is wishing for either a visit from her family or some money as she has nothing. She gave Mark some phone numbers which he will follow up on for her. Mark said he really liked these ladies and they had a lot of fun together. They were quite happy with his surprise visit and he can only say the same thing.

FPSS advocate Helen, visited Kristin today in Lard Yao Prison. Helen says that Kristin seemed in good spirits but has no money and so is not able to buy things. Her family have finally contacted her by post. Evidently they state that they have been busy and despite the fact that they live close to the prison, they have not been able to visit.

Kristin mentioned that she is happy with her lawyer, a fellow prisoner who has been there for 20 years! Apparently she has helped alot of people understand the judicial process they face.

Kristin has two ladies writing to her now who got her details from the FPSS website. One is an Australian and the other, a German girl. They have asked how to send her things but of course, we can only advise that it is the recurring problem, the strict rules of Kristin being a high category prisoner (more than a certain amount of drugs) so she is not able to have any parcels from the outside.

FPSS are trying to find a way around this problem.

Kristin is currently detained in Bangkok's Lard Yao prison. Her parents have stopped visiting her, so life has now become more of an emotional struggle than ever before. This young Thai woman is trying to turn the unfortunate events of her life into something positive. She is a beautiful young woman who inspires others to make the most of the difficulties surrounding them. She is just such a special person with a special kind of strength and goodness that is infectious.

To the outside world Kristin smiles and most would never know her heart break. Kristin dreams of freedom and we hope that someone, somewhere and somehow will have mercy. Please give your support!
