Jagnathan Samynathan
Name: Jagnathan Samynathan
Nationality: Malaysian
Prison: Bangkwang Central prison
Building: #12
Sentence: Life sentence reduced to 40 years.

Case Background

Jag is a warm and friendly man and a committed Christian from the Mallaca province in Malaysia. At the time of his arrest he was in his mid 30s. As the founder of a failed shipping business, Jag headed for Bangkok in 1991 to try and make his fortune. Soon a drug deal he was involved in went horribly wrong and he was arrested. Jag received the death penalty but was later commuted to a life sentence and then to 40 years. Jag has used his time inside productively and has learnt to speak Thai, perfected English, and is now attempting Spanish (to go with his Malay and Tamil language skills from before he entered the prison) as well as learning to play the guitar. There is a sense that Jag is arming himself for life on the outside, although sadly this seems to be a long way off. Jag was hopeful that the 60th anniversary of the royal corronation in 2006 might result in a pardon for himself and some other prisoners. His fate is undecided.

Consular Support

Jag does not have any regular consular support but perhaps if people wrote respectfully to the Embassy staff requesting support to him, then it may help improve his current situation.

A simple letter of hope can make the difference in the lives of those struggling to endure. We hope that you might take a few moments to write a letter to Jag as he continues to endure. Please when writing mention that you were given his details from the foreignprisoners.com website so that Jag can let other prisoners know that help is available.

Feedback

Your feedback is important to us at FPSS because it helps us to keep each campaign up to date. If you do receive a letter from Jag then please let us know… so we know that what we are doing is working. From time to time a prisoner's circumstances may change and it is helpful if others writing to them keep us informed.
