FABIO'S SITUATION:
|
My situation started to turn bad in the U.A.E. while I was trying to ship furniture for a friend back to New Zealand where I had been living. Extra customs problems meant I run out of funds and the owner of the furniture would not assist with more money. I could have dumped the shipment and returned to New Zealand empty handed, but to be loyal to my friend I did a quick cash job "To shadow a person carrying gold and money out of Thailand". At 34 years old I should have known better, but I did the trip and got the funds and successfully shipped the furniture to New Zealand. On the way back from the U.A.E. bound for New Zealand I stopped over in Thailand just to holiday. My arrest in Thailand happened because I was dining with an Iranian friend and a Dutchman joined us. I greeted him with a hand shake and sat back only to be totally surprised as they started to talk about drug activity. Meanwhile the Police were watching and taking photos of this meeting. The men involved and caught for drug smuggling stated they never saw me before and that I was not involved, yet a year later I was handed a life sentence.
This is only a summary, but I want to add that it was a catastrophe in the name of law and order in Thailand, and it is just so easy to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and end up with a life sentence!
I have taken a wrong path in life and I can not forgive myself, it has caused me a lot of heart ache, tears and sad memories. There are a lot of websites with stories about murder, rape and beating etc, all I can say is that anyone seeing the conditions in here would walk out in horror! After six years now it has become normal for me or better to say I care less. Normal is using one of sixteen toilets in full view of 800 inmates with no toilet paper. You soon get used to using water and your hands. Open sewers run all around the building and some days the stench is unbearable. It is sickening to see condoms floating by. They are supplied free once a month. About 30% of inmates are affected by HIV. Because we use river water and live so close together TB and skin disease are very common. Eating well helps to keep you healthy and keep ailments away but like most good things in here you have to pay for this privilege.
In my building there are foreign inmates from Holland, Britain, Australia, Poland and a lot of Chinese and Burmese. We respect each other but it is far from real friendship.
I hope you find my story interesting to you and I welcome any letters from you. I want to find new friends in order to build up a new life, hopefully after freedom. To be frank I am also looking for moral support. I have made a mistake in life and it has had a huge impact on me. We all make mistakes in life but some small mistakes can be unexpectedly life changing - for the worst. Contact me please by writing to the following address:
